Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. Waksman et al. isolated it from the metabolites of Streptomyces freundii in 1949. The components of neomycin are mainly A, B, and C. Neomycin has strong kidney and ototoxicity, so it is generally not used for systemic application, and it is rarely absorbed by oral administration (about 3%). Neomycin mainly binds to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes to inhibit the synthesis of bacterial protein.
